POLICE have issued a warning to motorists after two ewes were run over and killed on rural roads this weekend.

Officers said the Swaledale ewes had been licking salt left on roads between the Ribble Valley and Pendle by gritters when they were fatally injured.

And they believe more sheep may have been injured in similar circumstances.

With the adverse weather conditions due to continue into next week and gritters set to be out in force in rural areas of East Lancashire, police are urging motorists to remain extra vigilant for wandering livestock.

PC Nigel Keates said: “Please be aware when travelling between Sabden and Clitheroe.

“Sheep appear to be licking salt from the roads left by gritters around Pendle Hill .
