A LORRY load of chocolate burst into flames near to the M56 last night.

The A556 link road between the M56 and the M6 was closed in both directions following the incident at around 7.30pm yesterday, Thursday.

Shortly before 9.30pm, the northbound carriageway was reopened - although the road remained shut southbound until later in the evening.

While the lorry driver was uninjured, the HGV’s cargo of chocolate was destroyed.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and Cheshire Police attended the scene in Mere.

Three fire engines remained in the area for four-and-a-half hours, with a digger also used to help clear the debris.
