A TEAM from HM Coastguard and New Brighton Lifeboat were called on to rescue two people and a dog in New Brighton this morning, Sunday.

The pair and their dog became cut off by the incoming tide off Harrison Drive shortly after 10am.

New Brighton Lifeboat were quickly on scene as they were already on the water carrying out a training exercise.

The team managed to get all three on board the lifeboat before returning them to the boathouse, where they were met by North West Ambulance Service Paramedics for a precautionary check.

A trip to hospital was not necessary on this occasion as all were just slightly cold and wet.

The casualties were given safety advice by Coastguard rescue officers before making their way home.

HM Coastguard also urged the public to use caution when walking on the beach and contact the coastguard directly to report such incidents.

A statement read: “Today was an example of how even prepared walkers can still get caught out by the incoming tide as they had checked the tide times before setting off.

“It is important that you give yourself plenty of time to return safely when walking on the beach before the tide cuts.

“It was also apparent from today’s incident that some well-meaning members of the public had dialled 999 and asked for the Police to report this incident.

“Although the coastguard would eventually be informed by police control, this could lead to unnecessary delays in mobilising search and rescue assets.

“We would urge members of the public to always dial 999 and ask for the coastguard for a coastal incident.”
