AN Urmston care home resident had 140 reasons to celebrate as she brought up her one-hundredth year in style.

Nancy Danson received 140 cards from kind wellwishers, including one from the Queen, which was personally delivered to her by the Mayor of Trafford.

She said: "I have had such a wonderful birthday celebration and was overwhelmed to be presented with so many cards, including one from Her Majesty.

"I can't quite believe I'm 100- I still feel young at heart and very lucky that I'm still able to enjoy the lifestyle I had before I moved into De Brook Lodge."

Shortly before her birthday on October 21, staff at De Brook Lodge care home had called on the local community to help them celebrate Nancy's milestone by collecting the tonne of cards in time for her birthday.

The home was inundated with deliveries over the weekend before her birthday, taking the total from 50 to 140 in just three days.

Nancy, who was born in Warrington and moved to Flixton when she married in her 20s, was joined by her family and friends for the special party celebrations.

A part of the local community for decades, Nancy raised her four sons in the area and started her career in healthcare by nursing at Trafford General Hospital. She later went on to work for Metropolitan Vickers.

Nancy has lived in the home since 2018 and still enjoys her hobbies which include watching classic films in the home's cinema room. She says that her secret to a long and happy life is keeping busy.

Danielle Aikenhead, De Brook Lodge lifestyle manager, said: "It was so lovely to see Nancy having such a wonderful birthday with her friends and family.

"We were overwhelmed with the response to out birthday card appeal and it was a privilege to present Nancy with all the amazing messages on the big day."

The Mayor of Trafford, Councillor Rob Chilton, said: "To be able to visit Trafford residents who have reached their centenary is one of the most pleasant duties of being Mayor. I am delighted to wish Nancy a very happy birthday and very much hope she enjoys a pleasant day with her family and friends to celebrate a long life."
