CHILDREN have been left upset after their handmade scarecrow was set alight at the weekend.

Last week, youngsters at the Warrington Childminder Support Network, based on Honiton Way, helped to create their Mary Poppins scarecrow to enter the Penketh Scarecrow Festival.

Two colleagues also worked out of hours to complete the scarecrow.

Throughout the week, many children visited Mary Poppins outside the Penketh Youth Club on Honiton Square to check on her and have pictures taken.

Sadly, the scarecrow was vandalised over the weekend and the remains were found on Monday morning.

Described as 'pointless and senseless' by one parent, the incident was then reported to the police.

An officer from Penketh and Cuerdley Police said: "It not only destroyed the scarecrow but put other buildings at risk.

"I will be looking at CCTV to try and identify the offender(s) if anyone has any extra information that could assist please get in touch."
