MANCHESTER Airport’s train station was evacuated this morning after a suspicious package was discovered.

Greater Manchester Police arrested a man who was ‘behaving erratically’ at the scene shortly after 7am today, Wednesday – with bomb disposal squads having since carried a controlled explosion.

All trains, trams and buses travelling to and from the airport were suspended as a result.

It is now believed that the incident was not related to terrorism, and that a bag found at the scene ‘did not contain a viable device’.

The male detained by police was taken to hospital in order for assessments to take place.

Chief inspector Andy Sutcliffe said: “I appreciate that reports of today’s incident may have caused some concern, but I can confirm that the matter has now been safely resolved and the area is returning to normal.

“Public safety is our top priority, so a controlled explosion of a bag was carried out as a precaution before an inspection of the contents confirmed that there was no viable device or components inside.

“I want to stress that there is no evidence to suggest that this incident was terrorism related, and I want to thank members of the public for their patience and support as we responded.”
