There was singing in pubs long before karaoke.
In December 1974, we reported that 'Throw us a coin and we'll sing you a song' was a familiar cry at Bolton's Clarence Hotel in Bradshawgate. Tom Rushton, of Mardale Road and Ernest Williams of Tonge Moor Road, both Bolton, sang to raise money on behalf of children in Bolton District General Hospital. Their efforts over three weeks produced £33.
There were also donations of games, soft toys and books. They were due to be handed to the nursing sister in charge of paediatrics to give to 33 children on Christmas morning.
