A GROUP of dads, veterans and coaches from Sale FC Rugby Club have raised more than £5,000 for a cancer charity set up in memory of a schoolboy.

The Alex Hulme Foundation was set up to fund research into Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma after 12-year-old Alex, from Sale, died from the disease back in 2011.

The team cycled the gruelling 90-mile length of Hadrian’s Wall, from Carlisle Castle to South Shields’ Fort, raising £5,200 in the process.

Alex’s dad Dave Hulme, who set up the charity along with his wife Nicola, said: “We would like to congratulate the guys for completing this marathon task which would be a fantastic achievement on its own, but to know they undertook the event to raise funds for Alex’s legacy is humbling to say the least.

“The response and support the lads have gathered is overwhelming and is much appreciated.”

Organiser Scott Bambrick added: “Although this was a very difficult challenge we all finished together and had a brilliant time. We were motivated through the challenge to do all we could to help the foundation and with the responses we got to our social media update videos throughout both days, kept our spirits up."
