TRAFFORD Council has pledged to help local community groups with a £120,000 cash boost.

The Inclusive Neighbourhood Grants scheme offers funding of £500 for local events and up to £2,000 for community projects that bring people together.

The scheme is a rolling programme and is available throughout the year.

An exercise group that helps people manage their mental health is just one of the organisations that have benefited from the second round of funding.

Stretford’s Hard Yards Running Club received £2,000 from the authority that will go towards helping the club increase its membership.

Speaking on behalf of the club, Russell Nash said: “We are so grateful to receive the grant.

“These funds will allow us to initially grow the club’s membership, which will enable us to become sustainable in the longer term.

“Being able to open the group to the community means that more people will be supported to manage their mental health and make positive changes to their lives by engaging in physical activity, being supported by peers and growing their social interactions.”

The club’s trainers use physical activity, peer support and social engagement to help individuals manage their mental health and make positive changes to their lives.

“Evidence suggests that structured exercise can be just as effective as other, more traditional methods of treating common mental health problems,” added Mr Nash.
