MANCHESTER United fans were treated to a flashback 20 years to the club’s greatest achievement when Reds legends returned to raise funds for the club’s foundation.

Exactly two decades on from United’s Champions League triumph in Barcelona that sealed an unprecedented treble, the squad from that year reunited to face Bayern Munich legends in a rematch watched by more than 60,000 fans.

The likes of David Beckham, Dwight Yorke and Teddy Sheringham were back in the red shirt with former boss Sir Alex Ferguson back in the dugout and ex- Germany skipper Lothar Matthäus on the opposite side as the hosts rolled back the years to win 5-0 – thanks to goals from current manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Yorke, Nicky Butt, Louis Saha and Beckham.

But more importantly on the day was the whopping £1.5m raised for the Manchester United Foundation to help with its work throughout the community in Trafford and beyond.

Solskjaer was pleased with the outcome of the day and said: “It’s unbelievable the support for Manchester United Foundation and we have to thank the supporters for supporting us.”

“I think everyone here on the pitch knows how much it means to play at Old Trafford in front of everyone at the Stretford End. This badge means so much more than just turning up; it’s a such a big part of our lives.”

Ferguson added: “The purpose of the game is Manchester United Foundation; they do fantastic work, they really do, particularly throughout Manchester.”

The event was hosted by lifelong United fan Rachel Riley, while singer Russell Watson evoked memories of ‘99 by performing Nessun Dorma as children from Foundation projects opened proceedings on the pitch before the game.
