THE M602 motorway was shut in both directions this morning due to a "distressed person on a bridge."

Police negotiators were called to assist an individual on the over bridge near to Junction 2, for Eccles, Salford Royal and Trafford Park, earlier this morning.

Traffic officers shut both the westbound and eastbound carriageways while the incident was ongoing, at about 7am, with traffic being diverted.

Police said the incident has "safely concluded" and the road has since been reopened.

North West Motorway Police tweeted: "It was a distressed person on the over bridge. It has now concluded — with a good safe result and the closures have / are being lifted."

They also posted at 8am: "The police incident on the over bridge at Junction 2 has now safely concluded with the assistance of police negotiators.

"Highways North West and Greater Manchester Police traffic patrols will now release the closures.

"Thank you for your patience and support. Safe journey to all."

Traffic was being diverted at the exit slip road, and then rejoining the motorway on the other side of the island.

Highways England previously tweeted about the incident.
