A man says Tommy Robinson needs ‘to hear the correct and balanced understanding of Islam’ after agreeing to meet him.

Nadeem Ashfaq of the Light Foundation said he approached the far-right extremist in Blackpool. In a video posted on Facebook, Nadeem is seen telling Mr Robinson he stopped other Asians directing their anger towards him.

Last week the former English Defence League leader, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon was hit with a milshake whilst canvassing to become an Independent member of the European Parliament for the north west.

Mr Robinson is expected to come to Preston next.

Nadeem told us, “Many of his group (when we met in Blackpool) were saying it was refreshing hear me tell them how our prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was tolerant to non-Muslims, and how the Light Foundation were trying to educate Muslims of that fact.

“Many shook my hand and posed for photos. His supporters were sincere I felt.”

“It's so important for him to hear the correct and balanced understanding of Islam, and how Islam at the very core of teachings promotes inter-religious harmony and respect for all people.

“He might hear something about Islam that he might have never known before and could affect the way he views Islam and Muslims. Dialogue is very important - It removes misconceptions and barriers.”

Nadeem thinks the reception from the general public will be a mixed one in Preston.

“Should he follow through and meet with us for a private meeting he will be looked after by us and treated with respect, dignity and courtesy, like the way the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would treat his guests, including those who distinct differences of opinions with him.

He defended any accusations that some will see it as giving unwarranted oxygen to his campaign

“I don't think anyone will ever know the true answer to that.

“Equally It could be argued that he could lose some of his extreme followers who hate Islam by the fact he might be 'getting soft in his old age' by allowing a Muslim to talk to him about Islam.

“And in that video, he is the first one to ask me for my mobile number to meet up when he comes to Preston. “
