CHELSEA midfielder Danny Drinkwater is due to appear in court after being charged with drink-driving.

The 29-year-old was arrested on Monday after a Land Rover crashed in Cheshire in the early hours of Monday, police said.

Officers were called to a one-vehicle incident in Ashley Road, Mere.

A man and two women were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Cheshire Police said: "A 29-year-old from Nether Alderley has been charged with drink-driving following a crash.

"Danny Drinkwater, of Bollington Lane, Nether Alderley, was arrested shortly after 12.30am on Monday following a one-vehicle collision in Ashley Road in Mere."

He has since been released on unconditional bail to appear at Stockport Magistrates' Court on Monday, May 13.

Police added: "A black Land Rover estate had collided with a wall.

"North West Ambulance attended the scene.

"The three people in the car, one man and two women, were treated at the scene for minor injuries."

Drinkwater started his career with Manchester United before joining Leicester City in January 2012.

The former England midfielder was signed by Chelsea for £35million in August 2017.

However, he has not played for the Blues in more than one year.
