THOUSANDS of runners will take to the streets of Trafford on Sunday for the Greater Manchester Marathon.

In the region of 20,000 runners are expected to take on the 26.2 mile route, and residents are being warned about traffic disruption.

Spectators usually gather along the route to enjoy the atmosphere and organisers are recommending that they leave the car at home and walk or use public transport to get to their chosen location.

A number of road closures will be in place throughout Sunday to allow the race to go ahead.

They are as follows:

A56 southbound:

Bridgewater Way to White City Way - 5am-11.30am

White City Way to Thomas Street - 5am-11.30am

Thomas Street to Bridgewater Street - 11.30am-4pm

Bridgewater Street to Edge Lane - 5am-11.30am

Edge Lane to Ashfield Road - 8am-12pm

A56 northbound:

Edge Lane to White City Way - 5am-11.30am

Stamford Brook Road to Fownhope Road - 9am-2.30pm

Edge Lane to Davyhulme Road East - 11.30am-4pm

A56 in both directions:

Davyhulme Road East to Edge Lane 5am-11.30am

Fownhope Road to Marsland Road (Washway Road) 9am-2.30pm

People are advised that if they need to use the A56 southbound, to use the outer diversion route, A5103 Princess Road (Princess Parkway) to avoid major disruption to journeys.

Anyone requiring access to the city during the northbound closure, should use A5181 Barton Road and then B5211 Barton Dock Road to the A57 and then follow signs for the city. Alternatively, after 10.35am when Barton Road will be closed at Kingsway, use Edge Lane to access A5103 Princess Road.
