MORE than £3,000 in fees collected in Weymouth on the ‘free parking’ day before Christmas have still not been donated to a local good cause.

Councillors had called for the £3,250 windfall to be put to good use locally instead of sitting in the borough council bank account.

Former councillor, Alderman Andy Hutchings, used Thursday’s public session at the borough council to ask what had happened to the money.

He was told by Cllr Colin Huckle that “with a bit of luck” the money would still be distributed to the community before the borough council ceases to exist at the end of March.

The Echo reported how parking was supposed to be free all day in borough council-run car parks in Weymouth town centre on Saturday, December 1. But many people apparently paid because they said the sign on ticket machines promoting free parking was not very visible.
