A THUG attacked his mother with a bottle of frozen water and a mobile phone after demanding cash from her.

Bolton Crown Court heard how Damian Dawson flew into a rage during a mealtime at his mother's home on September 9.

Michael Lavery, prosecuting, said Dawson called at his mother, Mandy Blower's flat, where she was with his brother, Arron Dean, and she offered him some food.

But Dawson, who has a long standing drug addiction, started demanding money, claiming she owed it to him.

She threw a £5 note at him but he became angry and hurled food around the room before picking up a two litre bottle of frozen water and propelled it at her.

The bottle hit her on the arm and Mr Dean tried to intervene, but was punched by Dawson, who then left the flat.

Mr Dean called Dawson's girlfriend to tell her what had happened and, shortly afterwards, Dawson returned telling Mr Dean: "As you said I attacked you, I will do it."

Dawson picked up a chest of drawers and smashed them over Mr Dean's back and then turned his attention to his mother who was sat on the sofa.

The court heard that, at the time, she was on crutches after injuring her Achilles tendon.

He punched her before picking up a mobile phone and throwing at her, hitting her in the mouth and leaving her needing eight stitches.

"She describes the look in his eyes and she was terrified because she thought he was going to kill her," said Mr Lavery.

In a victim impact statement Ms Blower told the court how she now feels about her son.

Mr Lavery said: "She expresses her disbelief that she is scared of her own son.

"She hopes he realises what he has done.

"She feels sad but she never wants to speak to her son again."

Dawson, aged 32, of Gower Street, Farnworth, pleaded guilty to causing actual bodily harm and assault.

Joshua Bowker, defending, said Dawson has issues with substance abuse, including heroin and crack cocaine.

"It has been a feature of his life since he was 11 years old," he said, adding that Dawson recognises that he also has a problem with aggression.

Sentencing Dawson to 21 months in prison, Judge Graeme Smith told him: "The injury to your mother is a serious, disfiguring one and may leave her permanently scarred."

Judge Smith also made a restraining order banning Dawson from contacting his mother or going to her home or workplace, for five years.
