PLANS to replace a former waste depot with 49 homes and to turn a Grade II listed pub into a 15-bed hotel have been submitted to Trafford council.

Blueprints for the former waste depot, located at Wharf Road along the Bridgewater canal, include 44 apartments and five townhouses.

The scheme was rejected by members of the council’s planning committee last year because of its size.

However, new plans show the development has been scaled back — and more parking provided.

Meanwhile, work on the Grade II listed Old Market Tavern pub has already begun before town hall chiefs have approved the application.

The bar was shut last year — sold to a private buyer —– and now its current owner is seeking retrospective permission to transform it into a hotel.

This is the second time plans for the former Altrincham waste depot have been tabled.

Last year, the scheme was rejected by town hall bosses because they feared the proposed seven-storey tower block was too high.

Lack of parking was another reason councillors refused the development, which would have delivered 99 homes.

However, revised plans now include a five-storey apartment block to house 44 flats – and five townhouses.

The new scheme will provide 57 car parking space – and room for 50 bikes.

“This proposal has been designed to make the best use of the site while meeting the council’s requirements for new housing,” read a planning report.

“The development is staggered from three storeys to the south of the site, to five storeys along the Bridgewater Canal and northern Wharf Road.

“Access is proposed via Wharf Road with parking provided on-site.

“The scheme will provide a high-quality development in a key location – and aid the authority in meeting its housing target.”

However, not everyone is in favour of the revised plans, as the authority has received two objection letters.

Residents say more homes equals extra traffic on already congested roads – and raised concern about noise and air pollution.

Altrincham’s Grade II listed Old Market Tavern pub may soon be transformed into a 15-bed hotel if plans submitted to Town Hall are approved.

The bar, which was reportedly sold for £900,000 last year, sits in Market Place and is listed as an asset of community value.

The popular pub closed its doors in November, which left some regulars ‘heartbroken’  and in the dark about its future.

However, applicant Rupresh Erra is seeking permission from council bosses overhaul the building.

However, work to divide the first and second floors into en-suite accommodation has already started, according to planning documents.

“The proposal seeks listed building consent for the following amendments to the Old Market Tavern,” read the report.

“Several of these items have commenced already and this application seeks retrospective and future approval for the works.”

Additional plans include a new canopy for the rear of the property – and the replacement of internal and external doors.

The report added: “The various modifications listed within this application do not seek to create damage to this listed building – and therefore should be deemed acceptable.

“The reinstatement work will be sympathetic to the character and heritage of the Old Market Tavern.

“Therefore, it should be considered that on balance the proposals will have no negative impact on the building – and will renovate it back into beneficial use.”
