OUR lives are frequently ruled by time.

School, work, appointments, transport connections all demand punctuality. Even something fun, like a run, swim or game of golf, may include competing with others or trying to improve on our personal best time.

Whilst it’s good to be motivated to improve, it’s also important to think about slowing down and switching off at times.

n Notice when your 'amber lights' start to flash. With traffic lights red means stop, green means go and amber means slow down. Your amber lights appear when you're doing too much, becoming stressed and overloaded. Sleep may suffer, smoking or drinking may increase, good humour disappears, all prompts to take some 'me time' and recover your healthy 'green for go' state.

n Employees forgo 19 million days of annual leave in the UK each year. But equally sole traders, small businesses and self-employed regularly miss holidays, saying they're too busy to take time away for fear of missing out on business opportunities. They forget that switching off provides a break to recharge batteries, often returning to work inspired with stimulating new insights and ideas.

n Start that big task by breaking it into chunks. Tackle sections, one at a time. Once started it won't be constantly playing on your mind. Then park it until you're ready for the next step.

n Do activities for their own sake. Make time for hobbies, interests and simply doing nothing. Value the fun, satisfaction and therapeutic benefit of pleasing yourself.

n Live in the moment. Appreciate the view, the weather, the scenery. Give your full attention to whatever you're doing, your coffee, meal, the people you're with and enjoy how your relationships improve.

n Turn off technology at a set time unless there's an occasional emergency situation. You'll find you become more time efficient when you commit to specific times for going online.

n Designate a place where you can go to truly switch off. For many their bedroom is their calm place. Include personal touches with fabrics, colours, decor. Screen off your workstation at the end of each working day.

n Wind down before bed, perhaps with yoga or a leisurely evening walk. Avoid that heavy conversation. Unwind with a relaxing bath and wash away the day's stresses.

Switching off is an important way to manage stress, often resulting in a better work/life balance and a happier, healthier quality of life.
