A NEW 16-storey hotel is being proposed for a prime location near Manchester United’s stadium and Lancashire County Cricket Club.

Bosses of US chain Hampton by Hilton want to build the 212-bed hotel on a former office block site that sits on the corner of Chester Road and Warwick Road.

It is on the main route from Old Trafford Metrolink stop and United’s ground.

The hotel is set to feature a restaurant at ground level  — and a roof-top bar.

However,  some people aren’t impressed with the plans — and a petition to the  signed by 35 residents, calling for the scheme to be scrapped has been submitted to Trafford Council.

The scheme’s opponents argue the structure will have an "overbearing" appearance, will dominate the skyline — and, if approved, would generate additional traffic in an ‘already congested’ area.

Cllr Mike Cordingley, who represents Gorse Hill ward, also submitted a letter of objection — and cited design issues.

“I’m disappointed the proposed hotel does not provide a sufficient frontage, which results in a key deficiency in the scheme, and a sufficient reason to reject it,” he wrote.

“However, if a different design can be introduced my objection would substantially diminish.”

The plans follow the council’s masterplan for the ‘civic quarter’ that will undoubtedly be Trafford’s biggest revamp in decades.

Drawings show a new pedestrianised "processional route" connecting the Old Trafford tram stop with United along Warwick Road, a move that could also see Brian Statham Way closed to traffic.

Hundreds of new homes, a "civic plaza" and an upgraded White City retail park are also proposed as part of the council’s multi-million pound vision.

The plan, currently at the consultation stage, would see a vast swathe of Stretford and Old Trafford transformed.

An additional tram stop outside United’s stadium is also proposed and would form part of the new Trafford Park line to the Trafford Centre, which is already in development.
