FAMILIES flocked to Smithills Open Farm as the birth of Jesus Christ was re-enacted during a special Christmas performance.

A procession of young shepherds, angels and wise men journeyed through the farm as two narrators told the Christmas story.

They followed the Star of Bethlehem until it came to rest at a stable that had been transformed into a nativity scene.

Resident goats, sheep, pigs and llamas congregated with some 250 people at the event yesterday morning.

It was the second outdoor nativity to be staged by children and adults from Smithills Fellowship.

Rev Vincent Whitworth said: "It was a really wonderful event that brought the community together.

"It reminds us what Christmas is all about.

"It was great that we could hold this event at the farm — we are very grateful to Carl Grimshaw, who runs the farm, for letting us join them and for allowing us to borrow one of their donkeys for the procession."

Musicians from Smithills Fellowship also played brass instruments as visitors joined in with some carol singing.
