A TRAFFORD College apprentice is celebrating being named runner-up Apprentice of the Year.

Emma Coates came a close second in the Apprentice of the Year category at the Altrincham & Sale Chamber of Commerce Business Awards, 2018.

Emma was presented with her runner-up award at a ceremony hosted by radio DJ Darren Proctor at the Best Western Cresta Court hotel in Altrincham on Thursday, October 11.

Over 150 local business people gathered at the seventh annual award ceremony to honour the area’s best businesses and their employees.

Emma, a heating and ventilation apprentice, had her efforts recognised earlier this year when she was crowned overall winner at Trafford College's student apprenticeship awards.

She was recognised for her dedication to her apprenticeship programme and her efforts in championing women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) industries.

A spokesman for Trafford College said: "From her early career with the armed forces in Iraq, to her role as an apprentice, Emma has shown complete dedication in every role she undertakes.

"It was this dedication which led to her being chosen as the face of a recruitment drive encouraging women in industry."

Such were her capabilities, even in the early stages of her apprenticeship, that she was entrusted with major installation projects at Wrexham Prison and Dumfries Hospital.

Emma said her ultimate goal is to show future apprentices the benefits and opportunities that this industry can provide by becoming a college tutor.

She said: “When I was told I was nominated for another apprentice of the year award I was blown away, and to receive runner-up is a great achievement. I couldn’t be happier.”

Tutor Bob Barlow added: “Emma’s desire to make a real contribution to class activity through her vibrant approach makes her the worthiest recipient of this award.

"She is a meticulous learner; she works well on her own, takes the lead when required, and her enthusiasm motivates the class.

"Emma deserved to be recognised for the degree to which she has achieved and progressed throughout the course, both at college and in her place of work.”
