THE people of Trafford voted to remain in the EU in the 2016 referendum and residents want a say on the imminent Brexit withdrawal deal.

Trafford Liberal Democrats will propose a motion demanding a People's Vote on the EU withdrawal deal at tonight's (Wednesday, September 26) full council meeting.

The party, with support from Trafford Green Party, will also demand that the council prepare for a No Deal outcome with impact assessments.

In her proposal speech to Trafford's full council this evening, Councillor Jane Brophy will put the case forward for a united campaign to keep the country in the European Union.

Councillor Jane Brophy will propose the motion at a council meeting tonight.

She said: "Nearly six in ten of Trafford residents voted to remain in the EU.

"Clearly our Trafford residents already know the huge benefits the EU brings to our community.

"And latest polling suggests the number who would like to remain in the EU has increased.

"With many calling for a people's vote - who are we to deny them that?"

"Major companies have offered stark warnings about the impact of Brexit on British jobs and our economy as our Government publishes the contingency advice of no-deal.

"No-deal could result in catastrophic damage to jobs, the economy, our environment and livelihoods.

"Our capacity to deliver services as a local authority, especially in health and social care, would be severely impacted by a no-deal Brexit.

"It is our job to promote a bright future for all our young people."

The people of Trafford voted 57.7 per cent to remain in the 2016 referendum.

According to Trafford Liberal Democrats, various internal and external polls conducted in recent weeks show that 65 per cent would vote remain now if a 'People's Vote' had remain on the ballot.

At tonight's council meeting, Cllr Brophy will add: "Are councillors in this chamber comfortable sitting back, knowing that Brexit will cause a massive economic slowdown?

"Just as those who were too young to vote in 2016 hit the job market, or start the final stages of their education?"

It is understood that Council Leader Andrew Weston might give his Labour Group a free vote on the issue, whilst the Lib Dems expect the Conservative group to reject their call for a 'People's Vote'.
