As an historian and a qualified platoon commander in the British Army, I feel that it is crucial that we do more than just participate in or watch a parade of soldiers and veterans.

I have been part of the Remembrance Day parade in London which was moving.

However, in a world that is somewhat volatile and in which younger people do not fully understand the issues of freedom and independence and the sacrifice that so many made, as a member of Blesma, can I suggest that all schools undertake projects to educate and inspire their pupils on this subject? Learning is about discovering who one is and how fortunate we are.

The teaching areas are breathtaking and veterans would be glad to inspire all children and young people and in the town, with the bravest street in the UK, would this not be the most appropriate place to show compassion to those who gave and celebrate what our people achieved?
