TRAFFORD Council is proposing changes to its planning process in a bid to improve accountability and transparency.

The authority has suggested introducing a validation checklist that advises developers what information is required when they submit applications.

The list will be updated every two years — the data would then enable the council to publish viability assessments alongside other planning documents.

Council bosses say if the scheme is approved, it could be key to improve the provision of affordable housing within the borough.

Cllr James Wright, portfolio holder for investment, regeneration and strategic planning, said publishing viability assessments will improve accountability and transparency in the planning process.

“It will ensure the general public understands why a developer’s particular level of financial contribution is proposed,” he added.

“If the revised checklist is adopted, the public will be able to view the detail of assessments on the council website.

“They would demonstrate the financial assumptions underpinning development proposals and which justify the amount of affordable housing and other contributions which can be secured through legal agreements.”

The consultation documents has been available on the council’s website since Monday for a period of six weeks.

Responses should be addressed to development.management@trafford.gov.uk with the title Validation Checklist Consultation.

If no significant changes are made to the list as a result of consultation, it will be adopted by the authority’s head of planning.
