PEOPLE in Stretford will soon have to travel an extra three miles to collect their parcels, after Royal Mail shuts down its Lacy Street delivery office at the end of the month.
The decision to close the Stretford Delivery Office, off Chester Road, was confirmed last month and a closing date has now been set for Tuesday, August 28.
Royal Mail will relocate its Stretford delivery operations to their Manchester South West delivery office in Norton Street, off Kings Road, Manchester - a 94 minute round trip by foot from Stretford.
A spokesman for Royal Mail said: "Royal Mail confirms that the relocation of its Stretford delivery operations to our Manchester South West delivery office will go ahead on 28 August.
"This is part of Royal Mail’s ongoing transformation of its business to increase the efficiency of our operations and provide delivery offices that are fit for purpose for our people and our customers.
"We have a strong track record of managing change in our business and detailed planning is now underway to help ensure a smooth transition for our operations, our people and the service we provide to our customers."
The postal service assured people that there will be no job losses as a result of this relocation, with all 34 staff transferring to other delivery and sorting offices in the Manchester area.
Royal Mail also confirmed that residents will continue to be served by the same postmen and women, and the move would not impact on deliveries to customers.
The spokesman added: "If customers choose to collect mail from us because they were not at home when we tried to deliver it, they will be able to do this from the customer service point at Manchester South West delivery office.
"This is open considerably longer than the office at Stretford, including until 8.00pm on Wednesdays and between 11.00am and 3.00pm on Sundays.
"Stretford customers do not have to travel to Manchester South West to pick up their mail if they do not want to or are unable to do so.
"Royal Mail can now leave many mail items with a neighbour if customers are not at home when we attempt delivery.
"Customers can nominate a dedicated neighbour to take in their parcels by filling in a form at their delivery office.
"Customers can also arrange a redelivery free of charge on a day that is convenient for them (including Saturdays), or Royal Mail can deliver the item to a different address within the same postcode area.
"This service can be arranged by calling the number on the “Something for You” card we leave or by visiting our website at www.royalmail.com/redelivery."
