I RECENTLY volunteered to help The Urmston Wombles with the tidy-up of the war memorial gardens in Golden Hill Park in Urmston.

I spent just two hours with them and it was tough going digging out all the weeds and then planting fresh new flowers.

I enjoy gardening as you get instant results. I also enjoyed learning all about the great work the Wombles do to keep our area tidy and well maintained, along with other community groups who also get stuck in to keep our green areas blooming!

I have a few upcoming free family events and I would love it if you could come along and support them.

On Saturday, July 7, on Golden Hill Park in Urmston between 12pm and 5pm, I will be Master of Ceremonies and also performing some Rat Pack classics at the NHS Party in the Park.

Organised by Joanne Harding, the event will celebrate the 70th birthday of the NHS in the place of its birth here in Urmston.

There will be a staff award ceremony, two bands, two choirs and local artists performing throughout the afternoon and lots of stalls. The theme is working to end loneliness and isolation and to raise money for Cyril Flint and Age UK Trafford.

On Sunday, July 8, between 11am and 4pm, I will be performing at Trafford Live at Trafford Town Hall. The event is to celebrate the best that Trafford has to offer. Trafford Live have teamed up with Lancashire Cricket Club to bring a fun-filled day for the whole family. You can have a look around emergency service vehicles and the Town Hall, get involved in sports activities, crafts and enjoy the live music. There is so much going on throughout the day.

I will be singing at 2.25pm in the sunken gardens and I hope you will join me.

To finish, I would like to pay my respects to William ‘Bill’ Speakman, from Altrincham who has sadly passed away aged 90. Bill was the only living Victoria Cross holder from the Korean War. He was the pride of Altrincham and has a bridge named after him.

I feel it is very important that we never forget men like Bill and the sacrifices they made for our freedom. My condolences to his family.
