TRAFFORD Liberal Democrats have announced their candidates for the upcoming general election.

Fresh from the race to become Manchester’s first elected Mayor, Trafford councillor Jane Brophy has been selected as the Lib Dems candidate for MP of Altrincham and Sale West.

She will go up against Trafford Labour’s party leader Andrew Western and Conservative’s Graham Brady, who will be fighting to retain the seat on June 8.

Ms Brophy said issues affecting the environment, including fracking, the garden waste charge and the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework, are top of her agenda.

''I campaigned to scrap the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework, and I will continue to hold local politicians to account over this issue,” she said.

"Our green spaces are an important lifeline into our cities and urban areas and continued development will only aid in the deterioration of everyone's health and well-being.''

The party have also selected their candidate for the Stretford and Urmston, Dr Anna Fryer.

The National Health Service and the risks of further cuts to social care services form a large part of Dr Fryer’s campaign.

She said: ''Our health and social care service is so important, and with an aging population we need new ways of working in order that everyone gets the care they require, this includes mental health which for so long has been the Cinderella of our health service and the effects of this under funding are striking as they knock on to other services that are struggling to cope.''

William Jones is standing as the Lib Dem candidate for Wythenshawe and Sale East seat.

Mr Jones will be campaigning on Brexit and its effects on the local economy, in particular Trafford Park.

Mr Jones said: ''This is the Brexit election, this is our chance to change Britain's future and put a halt to Theresa May's Hard Brexit agenda that will put people out of work and further squeeze living standards.''
