OPTICIANS IN Altrincham and Sale are urging Trafford's sun seekers to make sure their sunglasses provide adequate UV protection to prevent serious eye problems.
Excessive UV exposure over a period of time, can lead to cataracts or macula degeneration, which is the leading cause of blindness in later life.
Stephen Kirkham, store director at Specsavers Altrincham, said: " Similarly, many people buy sunglasses without considering whether they offer adequate protection against UV rays. Many sunglasses are designed with fashion, rather than safety, in mind.
"Sunglasses should bear the CE kite mark and offer 99-100 per cent UV protection, which is indicated on labelling with the mark UV-400."
