FORMER Altrincham Grammar School student, Ellie Drainey, is one of three Swansea University languages students to have won German government scholarships.

The scholarships allow Ellie, 19, and the two other students to follow summer courses at German universities, with the aim of improving their language skills and their knowledge of the country.

Ellie and the other successful students - Jessica Rees and Cobi King - have just completed their first year of study in the Department of Languages, Translation and Communication.

Ellie's scholarship will take her to the University of Aachen.

She said: "I really liked learning languages at school. I did Spanish and German and I also have family in Spain.

"I’ve found that the structure of the German language also seems very logical to me – you can see how its different parts fit together.

"I’m also drawn to German culture, whether it’s music, film or history."

Ellie is studying German and history at Swansea.
