A QUEEN of cakes from Urmston is celebrating after adding another layer of success to her career in edible artistry.

Marie McGrath, owner of Marie’s Bakehouse in Queens Road won gold for her entry in last weekend’s Cake International Show at Event City, Trafford Park.

The 38-year-old’s Wizard of Oz themed cake, which took over 40 hours to decorate, was entered into the ‘celebration cake’ category, earning Marie her second gold at the prestigious event.

The former Davyhulme Primary School teacher has been running her business from home for the last four years.

As well as creating elaborate celebration cakes for all manner of occasions, she runs classes for adults and children from The Croft in Church Road, Flixton, where aspiring cake makers can learn some professional tricks of the trade.

“I like the creativity of it and, once it’s made, it’s enjoyed,” said the former Davyhulme Primary School teacher.

“The Wizard of Oz is one of my husband’s favourite films.

“I’d actually taken an order to do an Oz themed cake and I’d really enjoyed it, so decided to do another for the show.

“It was nice to get gold, but more than that, it was the response of people to the cake itself. There are so many fans of the film and I had a lot of nice comments.

As well as her triumphant Wizard of Oz themed cake, Marie’s other creations have included an elaborate wedding cake in the shape of the house from Disney’s cartoon ‘Up’.

Marie’s Bakehouse can also put together dessert tables with all manner of goodies, including cupcakes, cake pops, brownies, meringues and macarons.
