TRAFFIC is currently believed to be backed up along the A56 because of a burst water main.
The burst is thought to be affecting traffic heading towards Sale and Altrincham from the M60, rather than traffic heading in the opposite direction.
Sale councillor Mike Freeman said: "My daughter was dropping off my grandchild this morning and she said she could not believe how bad the traffic was heading along the A56, which she thought was being controlled by four way traffic lights at Broadheath."
One person on Twitter said it took him 90 minutes to drive three miles from MacDonald's in Stretford to Eastway.
