FORMER Manchester United chief executive, David Gill, was instrumental in securing a visit from Sir Alex Ferguson to open Altrincham FC’s new community sports hall, it has been revealed.

The Manchester United legend will visit Moss Lane on February 9 to cut the red ribbon on the £750,000 community hall facility.

Altrincham FC chairman, Graham Rowley said: "A lot has been said about who should conduct the opening ceremony, but you cannot get a bigger name anywhere in football than Sir Alex Ferguson.

We could not have wished for anyone better.

"It was with the help of former United chief executive David Gill that we managed to secure the services of Sir Alex.

“David was a regular visitor when United's reserves used to play at our ground, and he has occasionally come along to watch us, when his busy schedule has permitted. We are grateful to him, as well."

Completed in November 2014, Altrincham FC’s new community sports hall has been open for business since December.

Around £550,000 for the new facility was secured through grants, but the rest has been raised by the community with a wide range of fundraising activities.

Although construction is now complete, a further £63,000 still needs to be raised to cover the cost. With the arrival of Manchester United’s former manager on the horizon, it has already got local people talking about the sports hall and gaining more interest.

The hall is currently running yoga, Slimming World, Scouts, Beavers, Cubs, karate, boxing, senior aerobics, socials, after school clubs and mini kickers.

It is also the venue for Altrincham FC’s match day food and drink, as well as being available for private hire.
