A LEADING politician has voiced her concerns about road safety in Trafford.

Stretford and Urmston MP Kate Green, said she raised her fears as part of Road Safety week (Nov 17 to November 23), and following an accident in which a Flixton child was struck by a car a fortnight ago.

The organisers of the national safety week called on all road users to “look out for each other” to help stop the five deaths every day on UK roads, by protecting pedestrians and cyclists.

Ms Green is calling on the government and people in Trafford to ensure there a reduction in the type of recent accident, where a ten year old girl from Flixton Juniors, was in collision with the car on Delamere Road.

Government figures released last month showed that deaths and serious injuries on Britain’s roads rose by 4 per cent in the first quarter of the year, compared to 2013.

In Ms Green's constituency in 2013, nine pedestrians and cyclists were seriously injured or killed.

She said “I am calling on people in Trafford to look out for each other. Whether you are a pedestrian, cyclist or motorist, we all need to respect each other on the roads.

“I’ve written to all local primary schools to see how I can work with them to tackle inconsiderate driving and parking around schools and promote road safety. Hopefully, by working together we can prevent avoidable deaths and injuries on Trafford’s roads.”

“Worrying increases in deaths and serious injuries on our roads this year show why we cannot take safety for granted. Five people are still killed on Britain’s roads every day and each one is a tragedy."

In a controversial move, Trafford Council is looking to reduce school crossing patrols by one third, in an effort to slash part of its budget by £24m in 2015/2016. Those cuts are currently out to public consultation.
