TRAFFORD'S primary schools are celebrating the news that they have topped the latest Key Stage Two tables.

The statistics show that 87 per cent of Year Six pupils achieved the expected Level Four standard or above in reading, writing and mathematics in 2014. This was sufficient to see Trafford joint top, together with the London Boroughs of Richmond upon Thames and Sutton.

The figure marks a continued improvement for the borough's primary schools, with 81 per cent of pupils achieving the targets in 2012 and 83 per cent achieving the targets in 2013.

Trafford's performance also sees the borough's primary schools top the performance chart in Greater Manchester, with Wigan in second place with 80 per cent.

Neighbouring Manchester saw 76 per cent of Year Six pupils achieve the expected Level Four standard or above in reading, writing and Maths.

Trafford Council’s Executive Councillor for Children’s Services, Mike Cornes, said this is excellent news. He added: “These latest results highlight the exceptional standards of education achieved in Trafford across all stages.

"But while these are cause for celebration, they really only tell part of the story. It is the wider opportunities provided in all our schools for individuals to develop and meet their individual potential that is the key.

"I would like to extend my personal congratulations to all the pupils, teachers and school staff, governors, parents and Council officers for their hard work and determination.”

Cllr Cornes' sentiments were echoed by Trafford council leader Councillor Sean Anstee.

He said: "Once again, Trafford can be proud of its primary education system, which when combined with the hard work of all schools and pupils involved, continues to prove that we are the place to be to get young people off to the best start in life.

"It's important to note we are not just a leafy borough with schools in privileged areas.

"Those in our more deprived areas also perform excellently."
