Trafford police are carrying out a clampdown operation targeting the illegal use of vehicles such as go-peds, mini-motos and scooters.

The initiative follows six deaths in Greater Manchester in 2006 that were related to incidents with off-road motorbikes.

Any rider unable to produce proof of insurance could have their vehicle impounded and - as Messenger reporter Simon Greenhalgh discovered when he visited a scrap-yard - the bike could ultimately be crushed.

Officers seized the bike from a youth in Altrincham whose anti social behaviour had been persistently causing problems for the community explained Sgt Debbie Rasmussen, from Trafford's Copshop team.

"We were on patrol and received several complaints from residents about noise nuisance and the danger aspect of the bike. We received information that it was a local lad on the estate.

"We went round to see him and seized the bike while he was reported for several offences including riding without insurance and a licence."

Residents affected by the problem of off-road bikes can phone Trafford council's special Motorcycle Nuisance Help-line on 0870 050 7373.
