A new mobile police unit - with the capability to be deployed into hot-spot' crime areas at a moments notice - has been set-up in Trafford.

The eight strong Copshop' team - consisting of a sergeant, two police constables and five police community support officers (PCSOs) - aims to provide a visible presence and help reassure residents and deter offenders.

Their special van, on loan until a new sponsored vehicle arrives in March, is kitted out with IT, phone and kitchen equipment that enables it to act a stand-alone police station.

The Copshop will be deployed from Altrincham and will initially work solely with the station's area team until they complete their training at the end of March.

"I'm really looking forward to be part of this exciting new project and hopefully, it will enable us to make a real difference to the lives of local people," said Copshop Sgt Deborah Rasmussen.

"Problems will vary from area to area and it will be essential to work closely with individual communities, partner agencies and the local neighbourhood policing team so that we understand what is needed.

"Overall, it will give us the chance to do the things that we joined the police to do, such as listening to community views on policing and zoning in on the real problems in the area."

Chf Supt Janette McCormick, Trafford divisional commander, added: "We are delighted with this new unit, which will help us to get right into the heart of those communities who are suffering the most from crime and disorder problems.

"It will enable us to work even more closely with Trafford residents in these hotspot areas, so that we can address and resolve those issues that are of most concern to them."
