A VOLUNTEER who dedicates her free time to working with child witnesses at court has won a national award in recognition of her efforts.

Jan Howell, a volunteer with Trafford Witness Service, will be presented with a national Justice Award for outstanding dedication to helping witnesses.

The 61 year old from Stretford, has worked for Victim Support and Witness Service for eleven years and is specially trained in dealing with child witnesses giving evidence in both magistrate and crown court cases.

She is regularly called upon to help in other boroughs of Greater Manchester to assist with some of the most difficult cases and was on hand to help during the Shipman trial in 1998.

Jan's district manager, Angela Stewart, said: "I am absolutely thrilled that Jan is collecting this award.

"She is a very modest lady and one which our organisation heavily relies upon to ensure that children involved in often traumatic situations are supported and cared for.

"Jan has a unique quality of putting children at their ease and makes then feel comfortable giving evidence. She thoroughly deserves this award and I delighted she is being recognised in this way."

The national awards ceremony, hosted by Crimewatch presenter Fiona Bruce, recognises people who have dedicated their time to working with victims, witnesses and offenders.

The awards are in their third year and are held at the Institute of Directors in London. Other attendees include the Home Secretary John Reid, the Attorney General, Baroness Scotland and Lord Falconer.

Fiona said: "I am delighted to be hosting the Justice Awards again this year. I find it so rewarding to meet the finalists and winners - people who are actually making a real difference in people's lives.

"A lot of what they do is so thankless. Most people who come into contact with the Criminal Justice System do so involuntarily, making it even harder for people to do their jobs, and can result in negative news about the system.

"But that makes the achievements of the award winners even more impressive. It's great to be involved in giving them their moment in the sun. I certainly don't have it in me, so meeting them is an inspiration."
