Parents are being urged not to buy their child a potential death machine' Christmas present.

The Greater Manchester Police Authority (GMPA) has released the chilling message as part of a clampdown on the illegal use of off-road bikes such as go-peds, mini-motos and petrol scooters.

During the last 12 months there have been six deaths directly related to off-road bikes in the Greater Manchester area.

It's illegal to ride these vehicles in any public place including roads, parks and open spaces and they cannot be taxed or insured.

GMPA's vice chairman Paul Murphy said: "These machines are not toys. They can reach speeds of 60 mph, are a menace and have proved to be lethal.

"These vehicles are ridden recklessly, and often in an intimidating manner, on pavements and in parks causing misery to thousands of people. We are appealing to parents not to buy one of these bikes."

Chief Insp Haydn Roberts added: "We have seen a dramatic increase in anti-social behaviour involving the illegal use of mini-motos and off road motor cycles.

"It's important that parents and owners know the law on the use of these machines and the dangers associated with this type of behaviour.

"These machines are not toys and they have been involved in fatalities in Greater Manchester. We will use all the powers of seizure available to us to remove and crush these machines when they are found to be operating illegally."
