THE people of Altrincham are being invited to have their say on major plans for Stamford New Road.

Trafford council last week unveiled the latest £1.5million scheme for the town centre, which will see improvements to traffic flow, pedestrian access and appearance on the major thoroughfare.

A two-week consultation on the proposals will begin on Monday.

The provisional programme includes: implementing a 20mph speed limit along Stamford New Road and adjoining Moss Lane widening and repaving footpaths erecting new lighting columns with provision for hanging decorations and banners erecting bollards along the road edge repaving Moss Lane with a shared surface for pedestrians and vehicles adding greenery improving the traffic signal synchronicity at the Lloyd Street, The Downs junction Councillor Matthew Colledge, executive member for technical services, said: "Altrincham is really starting to go places now and we think it is important the council plays its part and that the best possible facilities are delivered to the town."

Mark Rubin, chairman of the Altrincham Town Centre partnership, said: "We support this Stamford New Road scheme together with Moss Lane and it's obviously going to grow from here.

"It is going to be a fantastic upgrade which is so badly needed."

The development would be phased to limit disruption and is scheduled to begin in spring next year, lasting around six months.

Once other work at either end of the stretch has been completed further improvements are also planned.

This is the latest in a string of changes taking place in the centre including the building of a temporary ice rink and cinema and the larger Stamford Quarter development.

What else is happening in Altrincham?

A £40million major redevelopment of the Stamford Shopping Centre on George Street, which will see Debenhams brought in as the new anchor store. There will be 14,000 square metres of retail floorspace, a new car park and refurbishment of the remaining space. Phase one is expected to be complete by Easter next year.

A six-screen Apollo cinema is due to open its doors on December 8. It will be the big screen's first return to the town in a quarter of a century.

A 2,500-seater temporary ice rink is also scheduled to skate into action at the end of this month. The Altrincham Ice Dome will be home to the Manchester Phoenix ice hockey team.

A series of sculptures around the town are gradually being unveiled. The first in Goose Green has already been revealed and the next will be outside Altrincham town hall.

Altrincham Town Hall has recently undergone a major facelift. The 1900 building now includes exhibition and conferencing facilities while its exterior was refurbished keeping the main architectural features.
