FOR the third year in a row, members of St Martin’s Church, Ashton-on-Mersey are putting on a fun play/variety show. This one is called the Wakes Week Wonder.

It’s about a rich mill owner and his family who head for a luxury hotel in Blackpool. On the train they meet a poor family who saved for their Bed and Breakfast through a holiday club.

The venue gives an excuse for singing, dancing and joking on the pier with Candy Floss and all the fun of the seaside.

The Priest in Charge, and co-director, the Rev Shaun Conlon, will introduce each scene dressed as a Pierrot.

Fellow director Joyce Heaton revealed that Punch and Judy will be people — not puppets — and that the child who will play the mill owners’ daughter is over 80!

Joyce will deliver that well-known comic poem Albert and the Lion.

The show is at St Martin’s Church Hall, Church Lane, Ashton-upon-Mersey on March 2 at 2 pm. Tickets, £6, from 0161 969 3311.
