KINKY Boots might seem the perfect production for someone who has a background in footwear.

But the musical has been part of a new direction for Sam Sawkill, the manager of Altrincham’s Everyman Cinema.

The venue, in George Street, was opened earlier this month by the Provost of Altrincham, Ken Garrity.

Versatile Sam, aged 34, has a degree in footwear design gained as a mature student between the ages of 25 and 28.

Sadly, his itchy feet prevented him from using the skill because he didn’t fancy sitting down all day.

But when he was a student, he visited Northampton where Kinky Boots is set.

What’s more, he designed shoes for Prince William and Kate’s, wedding.

Whilst at University, his daughter, Dolly Bluebell, now five, was born.

Following a separation, Dolly Bluebell lives with her mum but she loves to go out with Sam who recently took her to see The Grinch at his cinema, which will run until Christmas.

The four cosy viewing areas have couches to sit on and visitors can be served with eclectic wines and home-made hand-held snacks whilst watching a film.

Sam said: “At our cinemas seeing a film is more like a package, not just a chance to see a movie.”

For most of his working life, Sam has been manager at high ranking restaurants at places like the Trafford Centre.

He said: “It was fantastic when I heard I had got this job. I had a two stage interview. I had to submit a business plan and explain how I saw the company.

“There were a fair few applicants. I must be special!” he said.

He is indeed special which explains why the complex is far busier than originally anticipated.

“We have had a few sell-out screens. One of the most popular has been Bohemian Rhapsody, which we will keep until Christmas along with the Nut Cracker, which has also been a hit.

“We show what we think people would like to see. It will take us time to work this out. There has been a good response on Facebook and Instagram.

“Altrincham is an ideal town for us as it fits our demographic profile. The people here want this type of place.

“Everyman cinemas have big expansion plans. Next year we open 10 more cinemas throughout the country.”
