AFTER facing an uncertain future, Sale and Altrincham Musical Theatre is reporting bumper ticket sales for it's current production, 'Allo 'Allo.

What a difference a few months make.

Those of you who have bought tickets are in for a real treat, two hours of unbridled sitcom inspired silliness. Those of you who haven't should definitely make it your mission to see the show.

The role of Rene is a gift from Stuart Davies and he certainly doesn't look a gift horse in the mouth, with the randy cafe owner forever courting the affections of his sexy waitress Yvette. Stuart's timing is exemplary and the scenes involving him and his wife Edith. murderer of many a good cabaret song, are great fun to watch. There's a nice chemistry between him and Jan Taylor.

Paul Rendel plays Lieutenant Gruber, the camp, mincing German officer with a crush on Rene. For me, this is the best performance Paul has given for SAMT and like him, Jeff Harpin is a natural comedian. He plays Herr Flick brilliantly, the cold fish of a Gestapo man who tries so hard to be romantic with Helga, his female equivalent. My only regret is we don't see more of Herr Flick, although Helga sees quite a lot of him when she stumbles upon him exercising in his shorts and vest. Very funny scene.

To be honest I wasn't a firm fan of the TV show but I actually enjoyed this more, with Altrincham Little Theatre's intimate auditorium proving an ideal venue for the ensuing chaos. I imagine as the run continues - I attended the dress rehearsal - this 'Allo 'Allo will get even better. That said, for a dress rehearsal this was mightily impressive, with the pace hitting perfection.

Listen up I will say this only once - don't miss this show. In a world plagued by far too much seriousness, a hearty dose of daftness is just what we need.
