SALE AND ALTRINCHAM Musical Theatre’s Stepping Out, about tap dancers rehearsing in a church hall, is fun.
All good dancers and actors, the cast display excellent teamwork.
The tutor, Mavis, (Helen Blythe), who gives a wonderful tap solo, is your typical bossy instructor bringing her motley amateur crew to heel.
Her curiosity centres on their problems, Yet she, too, has emotional baggage.
Thanks to Sandie Cowle, Rachel Barrington’s snobby Vera wears spectacular clothes but they cannot conceal her nosey, vain nature.
I liked Gill Bate’s performance as the pianist. Her touchy, cantankerous, teetotal character appears to master the ivories!
The token male is Bob Etherington. His Geoffrey, always out of step, sheepishly dons his track suit bottoms behind a screen!
Eventually they all expertly tap into tap!
* Stepping Out is at Altrincham Little Theatre until Saturday April 12. For tickets, telephone 07504 771 051. Star rating: * * *
