Kevin Bryan delivers his verdict on some of this week's CD releases.

Anthony Phillips, "Missing Links I-IV" (Esoteric / Cherry Red)- This interesting 5 CD anthology delves deeply into some of the more obscure nooks and crannies of former Genesis guitarist Anthony Phillips' musical output. The hitherto long deleted contents were originally made available as four separate albums over a twenty year period but they've now been freshly remastered and fleshed out a little more with the addition of a bonus disc featuring some typically fascinating material which was recently unearthed by Phillips archivist Jonathan Dann.

David Olney & Anana Kaye,"Whispers and Sighs" ( Schoolkids Records) -This absorbing collaboration with rising Americana star Anana Kaye represented Olney's musical epitaph, as the veteran singer-songwriter sadly passed away just as the final mixes of the album were completed by producer Brett Ryan Stewart. David Olney was in many ways an under-appreciated performer despite recording more than twenty albums in a career which spanned almost half a century and having his compositions covered by luminaries such as Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle and Linda Ronstadt. The Rhode Island born balladeer's final batch of musings on the human condition understandably have a rather elegaic quality, with gems such as "My Favourite Goodbye" and "The Great Manzini" capturing Olney at his most affecting.

Kevin Burt,"Stone Crazy" (Gulf Coast Records)- Iowa born Kevin Burt has been electrifying audiences in America's Midwest with his visceral brand of electric blues for the past quarter of a century or so, and his latest album for Mike Zito's Gulf Coast Records provides an ideal introduction to this larger than life character's no frills approach to music making. Label supremo Zito chips in on guitar as well as handling the production duties here but Burt is very much the star of the show , and this self-taught performer's vocals are strangely reminiscent of the late lamented Bill Withers as he serves up soulful gems such as "Something Special About You," "Stone Crazy" and "Same Old Thing" for your listening pleasure.
