Millions of pounds each year are spent on arts and cultural facilities for young people, but is it being spent on the right things? Do young people care more about Tchaikovsky or Tinie Tempah? Should we be providing less Opera and more Oprah? How relevant are museums, libraries and cultural services to young people today, and more importantly how could they be improved?

This is where Dude – Where’s My Culture? Comes in. It is an event I went which gives young people from across the North West the chance to talk about their culture, what it means to them and let people in charge know about the sorts of arts and cultural facilities they would like to see in their area.

We (me and another member) went to Beswick Library to attend the wonderful workshop planned for us. This workshop was specifically for young people who live in Greater Manchester. This included Trafford, Salford and Stockport.

We had the opportunity to take part in a workshop to explore what arts and culture means to us people today during the morning session. We made creative prints, experimented with photography and wrote/illustrated what “culture” meant to us. We then had the chance to put our points of view across to senior decision makers such as Art Gallery and Museum Directors, people from the media and from Government by becoming a Young Culture Activist. Unfortunately, I forgot to pick up the form but I have been updated with all the news and projects they have been upto! I loved this event and I feel having workshops like these in the Trafford Libraries would be very entertaining and beneficial!
