ON a sunny but chilly November 23, 2011, ASR Charitable Trust and Manchester Universities Sikh Society jointly held Manchester’s 4th ‘Seva on the Streets’ event.

The large stall was again held outside St Peter’s House Chaplaincy near University of Manchester Precinct on the busy Oxford Road in Manchester.

‘Langar’, a free hot meal made that morning, was served to more than 500 people.

Seva on the Streets was first held in September 2007 – since then it has become an annual event.

It encourages students of the Sikh Society and others to get involved with worthwhile community service – homeless shelters are always informed of the event so as to provide a much needed hot meal for those who can’t afford one.

All sorts of people, University students and staff, professionals, and schoolchildren attend and enjoy the langar, while at the same time having the opportunity to learn about seva and Sikhism.
