THE Conservative Group deputy chairman, Cllr Williams, says that social mobility in Trafford is far higher than other parts of the country (‘Long-standing Tory defects to Labour, Sale & Altrincham Messenger, July 5’).
I would be interested to have the evidence for that. If we also knew why this is the case, it would presumably help other local authorities to increase social mobility within their own areas.
What we definitely know is that countries like the UK that have very high levels of inequality have reduced levels of social mobility. This is based on genuine independent research, details of which are on the Equality Trust website.
