Marthon gesture

1:21pm Friday 4th May 2012

AFTER spending a very cold and wet day in Trafford watching the Greater Manchester Marathon, I wanted to acknowledge the wonderful community spirit of the landlord and team at the Roebuck in Flixton. Not only did they open their doors to cold (sometimes borderline hypothermic) runners, they then took it upon themselves to provide blankets, spare clothing, hot drinks and sandwiches to those they were sheltering.

Some of those runners were experienced marathoners but like many others were totally unprepared for the vile weather on the day.

Although the Roebuck team were not unique (I witnessed one spectator give his socks to a runner desperate for something to warm his hands) their generosity, and that of other individuals and businesses along the route, must have been a welcome reprieve for runners who had trained so hard only to be defeated by winds and driving rain.
