I received a telephone call telling me I have been paying too much council tax and was due a rebate.

I was told this rebate could be in the region of £4,000.

The caller knew my name and address and telephone number but then asked for my bank card details so the money could be paid into my account.

Of course I refused to give him this information, ended the call and immediately contacted Trafford Council.

The council told me they do not contact residents in this manner about their council tax. The caller had witheld his telephone details (as expected).

Perhaps you could inform your readers of this scam and warn them not to give personal information to telephone callers. Name and address supplied, Partington
