Why I'm saying 'no' to Tesco

TRAFFORD Green Party is a key partner of the campaign opposing the massive Tesco in Gorse Hill. We are not against the development of the cricket ground, but occasional international matches do not justify year-round damage to our community and the environment. We are not anti-supermarket, but we believe that the store Tesco already has permission to build would be big enough.

At 48,000 sq ft it would be bigger than Sainsbury’s in Urmston and Morrison’s in Chorlton. Three years ago the council agreed with us, when they turned down an application for an 80,000 sq ft store on the grounds that it would devastate local businesses.

Now, they see nothing wrong with a store of 140,000 sq ft – one of the biggest in the country.

Cllr Matthew Colledge (leader Trafford Council) and Jim Cumbes (chief executive of LCCC) live nowhere near Stretford, so perhaps that’s why they think all-night deliveries, increased traffic and the loss of both local businesses and precious green space don’t matter. I’ve lived here for 30 years and I care passionately about this community.
